Pract 1.03

BBDC Class 2b

Pract 1.03 22 July 2018

Session 3: 11.30am-1.10pm

I was late for the pract!! Left house at 10.00am and I still couldn't reach on time. Didn't manage to take the shuttle bus from Bukit Gombak and had to walk all the way there. I think I probably would have to leave the house earlier if I were to take weekend classes again. Like 2hrs earlier... ohmanzzz... Anyway, since it was an afternoon class, I was hoping that it would be cloudy and that it wouldn't rain. As I walked nearer to BBDC, there was actually thunder and I was praying so hard. LOL so...

I reached BBDC and went to scan my IC to take the slip of paper then rushed to the room. The class already left so I quickly took my tag and went to the benches to put on my knee guards and helmet and all that. When I went to the benches, I saw Dinah! I was really elated to see a familiar face at the pract! :) So, we quickly prepared and I asked her who our instructor was cause I had no idea. LOL. We were deciding whether or not to wear the rain coat and the instructor mentioned that we would practice in the mini circuit first and see if it would start raining. It did start to drizzle abit but slowly it stopped. I was really happy though cause it was cloudy and didn't rain. Exactly like what I prayed for! Thank you Jesus! :)

So, the instructor, there were 2. (I didn't get their names again; they didn't mention either) Cause I was late so he checked my IC and all that. We went to take our bikes. Then we went round the circuit for warm ups. Following that, he told us to up to Gear 3 and then stop. Same like what we did for the previous pract 1.02. There were total six of us. So he mentioned that there was a need to us to start properly, meaning we had to throttle enough till it was about 4 RPM, then slowly release clutch till biting point. Very quickly we were to up Gear to Gear 2 and then quickly up to Gear 3. So, the instructor verbalised that he in order to pass, we must show him that we could start off smoothly and change to Gear 3 in the short time. Also, that we have to stop smoothly as well.

As I practiced, sometimes I would brake abit too hard, thus, it was difficult to maintain the stability and I would lose balance. Therefore, he told me that I should use my rear brake more. After practicing a few more times, I think I got the hang of it. Subsequently, he told us that we would be going to the main circuit. We could change to Gear 5 if we want to, he would leave it up to us to try it out first. He continued saying that after trying it out on our own, he would then share the proper method to change gear and come to a stop. He then also said that when going through bends, we need to reduce Gear to Gear 3. This is so because there is stronger engine braking than Gear 4 or 5. I guess then it makes it safer? I'm actually not too sure. But, ohwells.

So then, we went out to the main circuit and I was the fourth bike I think. At the start, somehow to the first bike was going really slowly, so there wasn't a chance to up gear. Subsequently, I think he managed to pick up speed and thus, we could have a longer distance between the bikes, thus we could up Gear. It was really fun changing gears and feeling the wind, especially so when it wasn't hot. YAY!

Following that, he told us that we had another thing to do to pass the lesson. We had to do the stopping at different short distances properly. I mentioned about it in my previous post on Pract 1.02. So, there were four cones at different short lengths. So, for distances shorter than 1 bike length, we had to lift our left leg above ground but did not have to put it on the stand. So your left feet will dangle for a short distance. On the other hand, for distances longer than a motorcycle length, you have to lift your left leg and put in on the stand. So, there were three different stopping, the first one, leg dangling, the second is leg on stand and finally the third is leg dangling again.

Okay so, we had to go one round through the circuit, change to Gear 5 when you reach/pass by the lobby area, then prepare to down Gear to Gear 3. The correct method is, apply front and rear brake slightly, close throttle, clutch in, kick down to Gear 3, release clutch slightly till can feel engine brake, then release fully, then release front and rear brake, then throttle, give it more juice. So, that's the whole procedure. There'll be one instructor standing near the bus bay area to check on this. Oh, another thing to note is that, you have to change to Gear 3 one car length before the bend.

Okay, so, I tried it the first time and... I couldn't really do it. Like, there are so many procedures to remember. So, the instructor there was telling or rather shouting at me (Cause I was riding and he had to make sure I could hear him; not that he was not nice) that I had to release clutch first then brake and also that I had to use my rear brake. The second time cause there was a car in front of me moving really slowly and I couldn't up gear so I was slightly lost. Thus, I didn't do the procedures again and he shouted the same thing again. So, each round that we went, we had to do the different stopping distance thing. The first time I did it, the instructor told me that I had to throttle slightly more. It was actually quite scary cause it was short distance and I was scared I would fall. So, I guess it really trains me to really be in control of my bike and to learn how to be stable even when stopping.

Back to the upping Gear to Gear 5, I managed to do the procedures but the instructor said that I had to use my rear brake. In my mind, I was thinking, I WAS stepping on the rear brake.. But I guess I probably did not step on it hard enough that's why. So while queueing to do the different stopping stations one, I tried stepping on my rear brake to understand how much I needed to press for the red light at the front to light up, signalling that I was indeed using my rear brake. I realised that I really needed to press on it quite hard before the red light lighted up. So, for the next round, I did the procedures and really pressed the rear brake much much harder. I think I managed to do it and I felt really proud of myself.

Then, back to the stopping distances portion, I think sometimes I could do it, and other times, I had really poor stability. There was this time where both instructors were there and they were talking, and I felt really conscious, so I did quite badly. LOL like, it was so bad that my right leg had to come down. I was so paiseh, I didn't look at them, just looked straight ahead and then I just continued doing it. HAHAHAH. Subsequently, there were moments where I did well and moments where I didn't do so well. Somewhere in between, the instructor said that I was not bad and asked whether it was my first time taking 1.03. I was shocked and glad cause I didn't think that I was consistent in doing the stopping. Then, a part of me was thinking whether or not he was being sarcastic. But, I shall take it positively that I was doing well. :) HAHA

There was this moment, there was an older male from Bangladesh(I think?) that was in the same Pract as me and I think he had some trouble understanding english so like the instructor took more time to explain it to him and checking to ensure that he understood. But, there was this moment where the instructor asked him to check back but he did not, he merely checked the mirror. I think then the instructor stood in his blindspot and asked him whether he could see the instructor through the side mirror. Then, he told him that he had to check back and I guess the male understood. Felt that he was slightly sarcastic but at least the guy understood. :) So, yeah.

So, then after doing the changing gear and stopping thing for awhile, we had to go back and park our bikes. I was so nervous, unsure whether or not that I had passed. As we parked our bike, I heard the walkie talkie that one of the instructors had, the guy was saying number 35 ah? and the instructor said yes. Internally I was like, OMG is it I passed. HAHAHA cause I was tag number 35.

So the instructors gathered us all, then the first instructor who was assessing us on the changing gear gave his comments, then the instructor who was assessing on the stopping distance thing gave his comments. He actually gave comments to everyone but me and I was like... Give me some comments too. LOL

So, the result is... I PASSED!!! YAYYYY! I was super happy. Although I didn't know why uh, cause I did stop quite badly on some. The changing gear was okay. But ohwells! YAYYYYY! It was worth travelling there and back HAHA

So far,

Pract 1.01, 16 July 2018 - 1st attempt pass
Pract 1.02 20 July 2018 - 1st attempt pass
Pract 1.03 22 July 2018 - 1st attempt pass

Hope to keep up this 1st attempt pass streak! Managed to clear stage 1 within 1 week! YAY!

Sadly, I went to BBDC website to book my 2.01 and there were no available slot till next Sat!! As in, the dates that I could, there were no slots.. I'm quite bumped about it. Like, I think that it's too long a wait, to wait till next Sat for a lesson. It would be better to have closer dates so that I don't forget the feel of the bike. Praying and hoping that there will be available slots tmr so that I can book! Preferable Wed or Fri!!

So that's all for now! I'll update again when I go for my 2.01! :)
