Pract 1.01

BBDC Class 2b

Pract 1.01 16 July 2018

Session 8: 9.10pm-10.40pm

Was super lost at first, waited at the benches area. However, I walked back and saw that there was a room of people who were gathered there. Asked the instructor there as it was my first lesson. His name is Jeffrey and he was really nice, he asked me if I printed out the slip of paper from scanning your IC from the red machine. He said that on the piece of paper, there’ll be my number tag and the colour of the number tag. So I went out to print the slip of paper, put my bag on the shelf (put at your own risk) and headed back into the room.

Turns out, Jeffrey was my instructor for the day! I passed him my IC and the slip of paper. Then he kinda showed us around the place. Like where the toilet is, where the water cooler is etc.

As I brought my own helmet, elbow and knee guards, I did not use the ones provided by the school. You could if you want to. Oh and you need to wear long sleeves or arm socks.. which I didn’t, thus I had to wear the raincoat which was quite hot. Also, he shared that only lessons 1.01-1.03 and lesson 3.02 needed to wear elbow and knee guards! Whoop! Oh, and for road, the instructor might not allow us to use our own helmets as their helmets has mic and stuff so that we could hear the instructor while on the road. Need to check with the instructor after passing 5.02 :)

After wearing the knee guards, he bellowed us towards the bikes. As I was taking with 2 other males, he took out three bikes for us each. He briefed us on the different parts of the bike. Like from the left handle, there’s the high beam, low beam, horn, signal etc and the right handle, there’s the ignition. He showed us what the different colour lights on the front of the bikes mean. Like the blue light is for rear brake etc.

Then he showed us how to move the bike from the bike stand. I think, even though I’m female, I am quite tall at 1.74m and big sized so it was alright to handle the bike. To push the bike off the main stand, you straighten the handle, shake it a bit, then push (Give it your all) and then use the front brake.

To put the bike on the main stand, straighten the bike, use your feet to put the main stand on the ground, ensuring that both sides are firmly on the ground then use your right hand to pull the bike up while using your feet strength to push the main stand into position.

To get on the bike, you turn the handle right then get on. Then turn on the switch, clutch in, on the ignition.

Subsequently, we were at the mini circuit and the wall tyre area. So he taught us to shift to gear 1 from Neutral, then throttle lightly and release clutch light to find the biting point. He let us do this with both our feet on the ground so that we could build our confidence and slowly up level to one feet on the ground, then to both feet off the ground. He also taught us how to stop. Use both front and rear brakes lightly and put left feet on the ground. Right feet should always be on the pedal. Wait, so its, Close throttle, clutch in, lightly press front and rear brake and come to a smooth stop and left leg on the ground.

After trying it out for a few rounds, he let us go rounds in the mini circuit. The important thing in this is to maintain throttle, to go fast, release more clutch and to go slower, pull in more clutch. Basically, controlling your speed through the clutch and not the throttle. It was pretty tiring cause I was just going round doing half-clutch. My left hand was pretty tired. But it was fun too, getting to learn and know the bike properly and riding it, figuring things out along the way, like the biting point.

Then after going a few rounds, he wanted us to stop at the start line each time to practice our stopping. It was slightly difficult cause my bike tended to move towards the right and I would lose balance cause we weren’t supposed to let our right leg come out right… So, I continued to practice and I got better. The aim for 1.01 is to start and stop properly.

Then he taught us how to up to gear 2 and how to stop in gear 1 from gear 2. I think this is supposedly covered in 1.02 but he taught us so that we can get some practice on it too as we were more or less familiar with 1.01. So we went gear 2 1 round, then close throttle, break slightly, Clutch in, down to gear 1, front and rear brake slowly come to a stop, put left leg down.

Yup, so we managed to do that for a few rounds and then that was it for the lesson! It was really fun and I enjoyed myself! Thankful for a really nice instructor too! He was really patient and would give feedback about what to improve on and such!

ANDDDDDD… I PASSED 1.01!!

I was so happyyyyyy!

Went home and immediately booked 1.02 on Friday, 20th July. As I can only book after work hours and the best timing is 7.20pm so that I don’t go back too late… I stay in Tampines too by the way. Travelling from BBDC back to Tampines is crazy. But cause its near my workplace.

So thats it! Can’t wait for 1.02! Hope I don’t forget though!
